  7.     On the night two years ago when FRED LEBOW first learned
  8. he had brain cancer, he vowed he would live to run the 26.2
  9. torturous miles of the New York City Marathon. Though he's the
  10. organizer of the marathon, Lebow, 59, had never competed in the
  11. city-spanning race. His cancer now in remission, Lebow plans to
  12. fulfill his promise in November. "What I'm doing tells people
  13. in my condition that they shouldn't give up. They should
  14. persevere."
